Abstract: Data from the Cassini mission, in particular the Grand Finale orbits, greatly improved our knowledge of Saturn’s magnetic field. The challenge now lies in trying to understand the interior workings of Saturn and how the planet generates such an enigmatic magnetic field. In this talk will discuss Saturn in the context of planetary dynamos in our Solar System, explain why Saturn’s field is so challenging to reconcile with our understanding of dynamo theory, and provide some potential explanations for Saturn’s dynamo. These explanations are strongly tied to properties of Saturn’s dynamo region, which suggests that magnetic fields may be an excellent tool at Saturn for unraveling the workings of the planet's deep interior.
