IGPP's Deborah Kilb was contacted by the NY Times to explain the unusual pattern of aftershocks following the tragic Earthquake in Gaziantep, Turkey on Feb. 6. On Feb. 20, a 6.3-magnitude aftershock struck at the southwestern end of the earthquake zone, killing at least 8 people, further traumatizing residents. Per Kilb, the aftershock, which released < 1% of the energy of the 7.8 quake, was within the range of what would be expected, but the 7.5 aftershock that occurred soon after the first quake was unusual, Dr. Kilb said.
