Munk's work to be honored at OINA

Oceanography International North America (OINA) will be honoring IGPP’s first director, Walter Munk in a special edition of Catch The Next Wave, February 16, 2017. Several speakers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, including Director Margaret Lenin and former IGPP Director, current Distinguished Professor of Geophysics at IGPP, John Orcutt will share presentations during the days-long Catch the Wave—in a program designed to honor Walter by discussing innovation in, and the current trajectory of ocean science.

IGPP Alum receives Presidential award

Huge congratulations to IGPP Alum Jeremy Bassis! Bassis, now an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan, has been awarded the Presidential Early Career Award from the White House for his contributions to glaciology.

Celebrating Walter Munk at 99

IGPP was thrilled help host festivities for Walter Munk's 99th birthday.  Munk's tenure at Scripps Institution of Oceanography began in 1939—when he applied for a summer job.  He began to develop plans for IGPP in 1956 and was the institute's first director.  A small collection of party photos is available here.  The full suite of photos taken on Walter's birthday, is available here.

Bock, Melgar publish GPS geodesy review paper

Yehuda Bock and Diego Melgar published a comprehensive review paper, Physical Applications of GPS Geodesy: A Review, in Reports on Progress in Physics on 23 August, 2016. The report may be viewed and downloaded from: http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0034-4885/79/10/106801. It will be free for a limited amount of time.

Science publishes Fan and Shearer's large quake aftershock discoveries

Congratulations to IGPP's Wenyuan Fan and Peter M. Shearer, whose large earthquake aftershock research paper titled "Local near instantaneously dynamically triggered aftershocks of large earthquakes" appears in the 9 September 2016 issue of Science. 

Aaron Patents OBS Fresh Water Release System

Tasked with supporting earthquake fault mapping study in a freshwater lake, IGPP development technician Ernie Aaron created a new release system for the ocean-bottom seismometers—that allows them to operate without seawater—and earned a patent in the process. https://scripps.ucsd.edu/news/new-invention-advances-freshwater-seismology-research

Bock, SOPAC featured in new book on GPS

Greg Milner's recently published book "Pinpoint – How GPS is Changing Technology, Culture and Our Minds" features the work of IGPP's Director of Scripps Orbit and Permanent Array Center (SOPAC), Yehuda Bock. Chapter 8 discusses the role of GPS in the Earth Sciences. Milner highlights Bock's research in GPS continuous networks for crustal deformation, seismogeodesy, and structural monitoring. The book is written for a popular audience and available on Amazon. 

S Constable Receives 2016 AGU Fellow Honor

Congratulations to IGPP's Director, Steven Constable, who has been elected to AGU's 2016 Class of Fellows. The fellows will receive their awards for "their remarkable contributions to their research fields, exceptional knowledge, and visionary leadership."  at the AGU Fall Meeting's annual Honors Tribute December 14, 2016: https://eos.org/agu-news/2016-class-of-agu-fellows-announced. 

LRI prepares case study of IGPP's RIO ROSO project

Liquid Robotics, Inc. (LRI) developer of the Wave Glider and a company, which partnered with IGPP on the successful proof-of-concept Autonomously Deployed Deep-ocean Seismic System - Communications Gateway for Ocean Observatories (ADDOSS) project, has prepared a case study report on ADDOSS’s successor, the proposed (pending NSF funding)  Robotically Installed and Online Remote Ocean Seafloor Observatory (RIO ROSO) program: http://goo.gl/0Ai7Bo.
